BOM and POM explained for first-time founders
BOM and POM are the two sections factories read first. Missing either one is the most common reason samples come back wrong.
Bill of materials (BOM)
The BOM lists every physical component in the garment — main fabric, lining, rib, thread, buttons, zippers, labels, polybags, and hang tags.
- Fabric: fiber content, GSM, weave, and finish
- Trims: zippers, drawcords, eyelets with sizes and colors
- Labels: main, care, size — with placement references
- Packaging: fold method, polybag, barcode if needed
Points of measure (POM)
POM is the measurement chart — chest width, body length, sleeve from center back, rise, inseam — with tolerances (typically ±0.5 in / ±1 cm).
Each measurement should tie to a callout on the flat sketch so the factory doesn't cross-reference two documents.
Related questions
- Can I generate a BOM and POM from a photo?
- SendToSample drafts both from your product photo as part of the style bundle. You edit supplier names and exact measurements from your sample before sending.
- What tolerance should I use?
- ±0.5 inches is common for cut-and-sew knits. Ask your factory what they default to — then state yours explicitly in the POM sheet.
